Tell Me Questions

  1. How do you check if the brakes are working before starting a journey?
The brakes shouldn’t feel soft or loose. Test them as you begin driving, and the car shouldn’t pull to one side.

  2. Where do you find the recommended tyre pressures, and how do you check them?
Look in the car’s manual. Use a reliable pressure gauge, check when tyres are cold, include the spare, and put the valve caps back on.

  3. How do you adjust the head restraint for the best protection?
The rigid part should be at least as high as your eyes or the top of your ears and as close to the back of your head as comfortable. Some might not be adjustable.

  4. How do you check the tyres for safe tread depth and condition?
Ensure there are no cuts or bulges. The tread depth should be at least 1.6mm across the middle three-quarters and all around the tyre.

  5. How do you check that the headlights and tail lights are working without leaving the car?
Turn on the light switch (with ignition if needed) and explain that you would walk around the vehicle to check the lights.

  6. How do you know if there’s an issue with the anti-lock braking system?
A warning light will turn on if there’s a fault with the system.

  7. How do you check if the indicators are working without leaving the car?
Turn on the indicator switch (with ignition if needed) and explain that you’d walk around to check the lights.

  8. How do you check if the brake lights are working?
Press the brake pedal and either check reflections in windows/doors or ask someone to help.

  9. How do you check if the power-assisted steering is working before driving?
If the steering feels heavy, it might not be working. Test by applying gentle pressure on the wheel while starting the engine, or turn the wheel just after setting off.

  10. How do you switch on the rear fog lights, and when should you use them?
Turn on the switch (with dipped headlights and ignition if needed), check the warning light, and use fog lights when visibility is seriously reduced.

  11. How do you switch from dipped to main beam, and how do you know the main beam is on?
Use the switch (with ignition or engine on if needed) and check for the main beam warning light.

  12. How do you check the engine oil level?
Open the bonnet, find the dipstick, and check the oil level between the minimum and maximum marks.

  13. How do you check the engine coolant level?
Open the bonnet, find the high/low level markings on the header tank or radiator cap, and top it up to the correct level if needed.

  14. How do you check the brake fluid level?
Open the bonnet, locate the reservoir, and ensure the fluid is between the high and low markings.

For questions 12, 13, and 14, you would need to physically open the bonnet and point out the relevant parts if asked during your test.
